A hackathon is a design sprint-like event in which computer programmers and others involved in software development, including graphic designers, interface designers, project managers, and others, often including domain experts, collaborate intensively on software projects.
While traditionally Hackathons have been focused on software problems, Hackathons can include other types of projects outside of software too focused on robotics or a STEM related problem which needs solving. These other types of Hackathons fall into a sperate category of crowd sourcing events. For example, Open Data Day DC was both a Hackathon and a series of workshops.
Other names for Hackathons include:
· Hack Day
· Hackfest
· Codefest
· Day of Code
· Codesprint
Frequently Asked Questions:
Have I participated in one?
Yes!
Is it worth going to?
Absolutely! You can learn something new, gain a set of new skills, and network with other people like you!

Yes! Check the event and see the details to see if there are also workshops. If there aren’t any look at the requirements and see if you meet them.
